Zalmay has been cooperating with the U.S. Government in its
foreign affairs since the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Being a political science professor at Columbia University he engaged cooperatively with the then U.S. administration of Jimmy Carter regarding the support and uplifting of Mujahidin in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union. But Zalmay's major role playing in the policy formation began when he was appointed as U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan in 2004.
The time when battle of U.S. army with the Afghan Taliban was at peak, Zalmay's appointment as ambassador in Kabul helped U.S. a lot as none other could better understand and interpret the ground realities than him, since he was an Afghan national and raised there.
His appointment as U.S. ambassador to Iraq is of far more crucial than the previous appointment seeing viz a viz the ongoing circumstances in Iraq. He was appointed as ambassador in Baghdad the day after he was relieved of his duties from Kabul in 2005. The most critical event in the history of modern Iraq took place during his ambassadorship, with the support of U.S. off course, the hanging of Saddam Hussain.
He was called back to U.S. in march 2007 after the local political temperature of Iraq decreased gradually. It was probably the first time in the history of U.S. when a person of another first nationality was appointed as U.S's ambassador to United Nations. Certainly, competency, skill-ship and previous success was counted for.
Well although he remained in good terms with the many of U.S. presidents and their administrations even in the times of Afghan jihad, President Obama didn't approved him much and was relieved from his duty as U.S. ambassador to United Nations soon Barack Obama became president. He remained almost inactive in Obama's era.
Then came President Trump and also the most critical turning point in US's war against Afghan Taliban. With in two years after Trump began president, he created a new office named as U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation under the U.S. State Department.
On the historical day of 29th February, 2020, Zalmay Khalilzad signed the U.S.-Taliban peace agreement along with his counterpart Mullah Abdul Ghani Biradar(Afghan's Taliban Political Representative) being a U.S. Govt's representative.
